Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Hinabi's core philosophy, language tracking capabilities, data ownership, and more.

Core Philosophy

Hinabi does not force you into a specific curriculum or learning path. It is an unopinionated tracking dashboard built to adapt to your methods. Whether you are doing pure media immersion, studying for the JLPT N3, or following specific grammar frameworks like Tae Kim or Cure Dolly, Hinabi tracks your exact duration and volume without altering your workflow.
Currently, Hinabi is deeply focused on personal analytics and a flow-state UI. While we may explore community features in the future, our primary goal is providing a clean, distraction-free environment. The focus is on robust data visualization and personal growth, allowing you to log your sessions in under 10 seconds and maintain deep work without pop-ups.

Features & Tracking

Hinabi independently tracks six core skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, Grammar, and Vocabulary. Because learners often over-index on passive input, the dashboard visually separates your activities into "Active" (production) and "Passive" (comprehension) categories, instantly highlighting imbalances in your routine.
Yes. Hinabi supports hybrid logging. You can log a session purely by duration (e.g., 45 minutes of listening) or by volume (e.g., 20 pages of manga, 50 Anki flashcards, or 2 podcast episodes).
Hinabi features automated integrations to pull progress data directly from external platforms. By connecting your accounts, Hinabi will automatically sync your review data from tools like Anki and WaniKani, centralizing your statistics without requiring manual data entry.

Analytics & Insights

Hinabi doesn't just track how much you study; it tracks when you study best. The Time-of-Day Heatmaps analyze your historical logging data to reveal your peak cognitive hours. This allows you to optimize your schedule by shifting intensive tasks (like grammar study) to high-energy periods, and passive tasks (like listening) to low-energy periods.
Hinabi's streak tracker acts as a visual heatmap of your consistency, designed to map your actual habits flexibly. You set your own daily, weekly, or monthly baseline targets based on minutes or sessions. This allows you to build a sustainable routine that fits your actual schedule.

Advanced Use Cases & Flexibility

Yes. Hinabi supports multi-language tracking within a single unified dashboard. You can toggle between languages to view isolated analytics for a specific target language, or view your aggregate study time across all languages. This makes it an ideal central hub for polyglots balancing active acquisition with language maintenance.
Absolutely. Beyond daily baseline habits, Hinabi allows you to configure custom time-bound goals—such as preparing for a specific exam date or completing a 30-day immersion sprint. You can track your pacing to ensure you hit your target volume before your deadline.

Platform & Accessibility

No. While Hinabi features automated integrations for popular Japanese tools like WaniKani, the core platform is language-agnostic. The six-skill balancing system and custom logging work equally well whether you are studying Spanish, Mandarin, German, or multiple languages simultaneously.
Yes. Hinabi is built as a highly responsive, modern web application. While you get the full analytical dashboard experience on a desktop browser, the interface is completely optimized for mobile. This ensures you can log a quick reading session or flashcard review in seconds straight from your phone.
No. Hinabi is built as a Progressive Web App (PWA). You can simply tap "Add to Home Screen" directly from your mobile browser (iOS or Android). This bypasses app store downloads while giving you a fast, full-screen, native-feeling application that updates automatically.
Hinabi is currently in its beta phase and is free to use. Our goal right now is to build the most robust, frictionless tracking architecture possible alongside early adopters who care about their data.

Technical, Privacy & Data Ownership

Absolutely not. We deeply value your privacy. Your study habits, logs, and analytics are strictly yours. We do not sell your data to advertisers, nor do we share it with third parties. Hinabi's infrastructure is built purely to serve you and your language goals.
Giving you total ownership of your data is a core priority. While currently in development, seamless one-click exports to standard CSV and JSON formats are on our short-term roadmap. Soon, you will be able to download your entire study history to run your own custom data science scripts or import your logs directly into a custom Notion database.
Yes. Hinabi is a dark-mode-first application. It was designed from the ground up with a dark, low-contrast aesthetic to reduce eye strain during late-night study sessions and maintain our sleek, flow-state UI philosophy.
